Some Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is a private railcar?
A: During the decline of passenger rail service in the first half of the 20th Century, many railroads chose to sell off equipment which was no longer utilized. Throughout the years, rail enthusiasts have purchased this equipment and restored or rebuilt these cars for their personal use. They range from heavy-weight Business cars with rich wood interiors built through the latter part of the 1920’s, to the light-weight Art-Deco streamlined cars of the 1950’s.
Q: Where can I travel to by private railcar?
A: Private railcars are generally attached to the rear of regularly scheduled Amtrak trains, providing service to most destinations served by the railroad. Via Rail Canada also offers limited service of this nature. For those wishing to reach more remote destinations, special arrangements can often be made with short-line railroads and freight carriers.
Q: How much does it cost to charter the car?
A: The majority of our charters are custom tailored specifically to the requirements of the client. Many variables must be considered when costing out a charter. These often include the total miles traveled, the number of rental days, crew, and the number of guests. However, most new clients are often surprised by the per person charge and value added by this method of travel. For more information, please contact your Charter Agent.
Q: Can I use the car for my hotel while at my destination?
A: Many Amtrak stations offer occupied parking and these options should be considered with your Charter Agent during your charter planning.
